Timisoara, Romania - Going into the game Timisoara was ranked among the league leaders and had good possibilities for the 3 seed in the league playoffs. Hosting CSS Giurgiu who is a completely different team over the last few months because of a couple crucial season ending injuries at positions 1 and 5 along with a contractual dispute that saw their star forward leave earlier this month. Now down to three imports, with their 2 playing point and their 4 playing 5 against a top team dressing out six imports in their arena with a full and healthy roster including Popescu, Capusan, and Tudosa; it would be a monumental challenge for Giurgiu, now in their 2nd season in the top division.
The game started fast for the visitors who found National forward Catalin Vlaicu (203-C-86) for a 3 pointer and then rookie big man Chris Ware (203-C-89, agency: SDJ Sports, college: Indiana Tech) for another 3. Timisoara had adopted a strategy of running a hard hedge on the ball in pick and roll situations but they were leaving the screener with chances to pop free. On side P&R, the help was sucked into the paint and again Giurgiu's bigs were being left with chances from the wing or top of the circle. At 18-5, Timisoara used a timeout to discuss a new strategy that would help them close the gap. The game went back and forth for some minutes, but the momentary show or going under ball screens, was giving Perry Petty (185-G-88, college: UTPA) more opportunities to hit pull up jumpers or turn the corner and get into the teeth of the defense. Timisoara started connecting on some shots as Zlatko Jovanovic (181-PG-84, agency: Beo Basket) was instrumental in helping to bring his club back with his veteran savvy and marksmanship from the perimeter. Jovanovic is one of the best pure shooters in the league and continued to show those abilities in this contest in addition to his ability to probe the middle and drop it down to Bogdan Popescu (200-F-78, college: Alaska-Fairb.) or Delvon Johnson (206-F/C-89, agency: Priority Sports, college: Arkansas) on the inside or out to Robert Sarovic (205-F-78) on the outside. Timisoara behind Jovanovic and company helped bring the home team back as the crowd gave their approval, Timisoara just down one at the end of the initial quarter 21-20.
The second quarter was all Timisoara as they seemed to have figured out the right formula on both sides of the ball but both teams continued to rack up the points. Giurgiu was being given space coming off ball screens but it was allowing Petty to get some really clean looks at the rim. The two teams changed baskets back and forth as Bivolaru hit a big 3 from the top for Giurgiu but behind the energy of Andrei Capusan (204-F-83, agency: Court Side, college: Lafayette) and Gary Gallimore, Timisoara's depth and size was beginning to wear out Giurgiu, pulling ahead 40-30 about midway through the 2nd quarter. A time-out by Giurgiu would call for more opportunities for Ware in the post and Romanian National Cristian Nicolae (198-F-85) coming off staggers on the back side and the visitors aided by a 3 pointer just before intermission by Petty would go into the half down 49-46.
The 2nd half would open with yet another tactical change, Timisoara was giving up some good looks from 3 points by going under a lot of screens and was more hesitant to show out too far on the hedge and Giurgiu was finding the range. Both teams were executing well and the game was coming down to who could slow the other down. Popescu was again huge on the inside, battling for offensive rebounds, and a carom and put back and-1 chance kept Timisoara just ahead at 59-58. Timisoara was going back to an aggressive answer on the defensive end of trapping the ball screen, but Ware on a few chances slipped in the middle of the defense and his 12 foot bank shot helped keep Giurgiu win the third quarter 21-20 as the two clubs entered the final quarter tied at 66.
The final quarter was tight for the first 6 minutes as Petty and Burrell hit a couple back to back 3s, part of the 15-30 overall from Giurgiu and again another timeout and a chance for Timisoara to readjust the way they would defend the ball screen. The clubs exchanged baskets leading up to the final 4 minutes but Timisoara was starting to miss some of the perimeter chances that they were so successful in converting earlier in the game. Now the home team would institute the tactic of guarding Petty with Dominique Archie (200-F-87, college: S.Carolina). Archie, long considered one of the top players in the entire league, is a very long and mobile 6'8 that can actually stay in front of point guards. It is a huge advantage for a player of that size with long arms and quick feet to be able to pressure and stay in front of much smaller guards but still have the size to defend the big spots as well, and Timisoara attempted to use this as Archie would be given the task of Petty and the club started switching all ball screens allowing Archie to take the screener regardless of the position. The flaw of course is that put the man defending the screener out in space against the ball as Giurgiu repeatedly put Sarovic and/or Popescu out in space against the ball handler and Petty didn't disappoint. He would attack and step back and hit 3s or he would hesitate with what looked like he was going to shoot to attack the hip of the much bigger defender and get into the paint and find shooters on the back side. Giurgiu caught fire with a little over 3 minutes left as Petty and Brian Burrell (192-G-84, college: UTPA) took turns knocking down big daggers pulling Giurgiu ahead. Vlaicu was coming up big on the defensive glass, Ware playing with 4 fouls was helping to stop the penetration and was also doing a great job with the screening game on offense and Timisoara took their last time-out trying to slow the momentum for the visitors before it was too late. Giurgiu against full court pressure would whip a pass from 3/4 court to a wide open Nicolae under the Timisoara's goal and Giurgiu was elated as Timisoara stood stunned. A series of free throws culminated the last moments but it wasn't enough to make much change to the outcome. Final score in Timisoara 86 - 96. CSS Giurgiu will now prepare to host Asesoft as BCT goes on the road at Costanta. This one hurts for Timisoara as they now may have lost out on a chance to host a series in the post-season dropping with the home loss to the 5th position.
Perry Petty with a monster performance of 40 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals! Brian Burrell 21 points, Chris Ware 12 points - 5 rebounds - 4 assists. Cristian Nicolae hit three 3s en route to a dozen points on the game while Catalin "Sarma" Vlaicu came close to another double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Jovanovic and Sarovic had 18 for the EuroChallenge club Timisoara. And Bogdan Popescu had 16, Delvon Johnson a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards. Archie had 8 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, a steal and 2 blocks and an all-around great defensive performance. Article credit: www.chrisbterrell.com

Giurgiu, Romania - A season that started so promising with convincing wins in the Romanian Cup against formidable opponents has taken a hard blow by the recent loss of Center Bryson McKenzie (211-C-83, college: N.Illinois). The news comes as a shock to CSS Giurgiu as earlier season injuries have cost them their starting point guard and hampered team depth. After a couple strong wins against #2 ranked Mures and Energia Rovinari it appeared the combination of Bryson McKenzie and Marcus Melvin, both brought to the club at the break, were making the difference for the club along with the emergence of Perry Petty in the point guard role. Unfortunately McKenzie had the injury this past Friday against Cluj and will be lost for the season. The team will regroup as they set to face Oradea on Wednesday and will count on rookie Chris Ware and Romanian National Catalin Vlaicu to help fill the gap by the loss of McKenzie. Perry's move back to the point guard position after an earlier injury to another player has been met with great success and won the player of the week award, however it has shortened the options on the wings. Now the big rebounder and defender in the back is gone and more moves will need to be made internally. The club has used it's 2 extra transfers and does not have the ability to bring two additional imports. This however is a great opportunity for Romanians Vlaicu, Iulian Corneanu, Daniel Bivolaru, and Cristian Nicolai to gain more experience and playing time as the team continues to build towards the future. This will mark it's 2nd season in the top league after being promoted to begin 2011/2012 season but already with a long list of top clubs that have been defeated, Giurgiu is known to surprise, and may have another trick or two to unveil before this championship season has concluded.
