Qatars Al Sadd retained the GCC Club Championship title, defeating the UAEs Al Wasl 79-70 in an entertaining final at the Qatar Womens Sport Committee Indoor Hall on Monday. Sadd were ahead 21-11, 37-28 and 50-42 after the first three quarters. Al Sadd got off their GCC Championship title defence to a winning start by beating Omans Nizwa 107-94. It was not all smooth sailing for the home side. Sadd enjoyed a seven-point lead in the first quarter (23-16), but it was reduced to just one (49-48) by half-time. However, they widened the gap to six points after the third quarter (77-71). Al Gharafa finished the domestic season on top and not even a credible performance by El Jaish could knock them down. Eugene Spates (203-F-87, college: Northeastern) led Gharafa to their third straight title this season, scoring 21 points in an 89-87 victory over Jaish in a tense Emir Cup basketball final yesterday.
