Tim Lewis Boosts Gilas Preparations - Jul 30, 2017

Respected coach Timothy Charles Lewis has recently been seen in the practices of Gilas Pilipinas which is preparing for the FIBA Asia Cup which is scheduled on August 8-20 and the Southeast Asian Games which will run from August 18-31.

Lewis is a former lead assistant coach of the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA D-League. He also has extensive experience in the international scene, serving as head coach of the British Under-20 national team and assistant coach of the British senior men's national team, assistant coach of the Panama national team, and head coach of the Thailand national team which unceremoniously cut ties with Lewis early this July.

After his disengagement from the Thailand national team, Lewis was hired by PBA team TNT KaTropa on a short-term one month contract. Lewis, whose specialty is zone offense and defense, was then invited to join Gilas practices where he has since regularly attended the trainings to provide insights and share his expertise on defensive principles which may be relevant to the Gilas system.

Lewis's inputs will be helpful for the two Gilas teams. For the FIBA Asia Cup, the team has had little time to prepare and will be playing without Andray Blatche. The lack of preparation and lack of offensive firepower will mean Gilas will have to tighten up its defense if it wants to keep up with the competition in the FIBA Asia Cup which will now feature Australia and New Zealand.

For the SEA Games, Lewis's knowledge of the Thailand team and Southeast Asian basketball will be critical in Gilas's drive to maintain its regional supremacy. Thailand stands as the biggest threat with the addition of Thai-Americans Tyler Lamb and Freddie Goldstein. Indonesia also remains a contender as shown by its strong 2nd place finish in the SEABA. Gilas wants nothing less than the Gold Medal in the SEA Games, and Lewis's exposure to Southeast Asian basketball will be valuable to the Gilas cause.

After PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial announced the lifting of the one-player-per-team limit for the Gilas pool, fans naturally became excited at the prospect of seeing other PBA stars join the national pool. Although Coach Chot Reyes has announced there will be no new players added for the second qualifying window which is less than 3 weeks away, he said they will look into expanding the pool for the succeeding qualifiers. The question now is who are the players who deserve a national... [read more]

Gilas Forms 23-player pool for FIBA qualifiers- Nov.6, 2017  (by Ariel Ian)

Gilas Pilipinas began its preparation for the FIBA World Cup qualifier this November by forming a 23-man pool from which the final line-up will be culled. Coach Chot Reyes, fully aware that rivals Japan and Chinese-Taipei already started training in October, chose players who made up the Gilas Pilipinas teams in the SEABA held in Manila last May and the FIBA Asia Cup held in Lebanon last August to ensure there is already familiarity with the system that the national team employs [read more]
