Will the NBA fall asleep on Elijah Pittman? - Mar 6, 2013

Elijah
Pittman
Kobe became the next MJ, Nash the next Stockton, and Howard the next Shaq ... Everybody loves historical comparisons.

Below are excerpts from a Draft Express scouting report written just before the 2007 NBA draft.

"a fairly anonymous name in college basketball"

"raw, but extremely promising hybrid forward with prototypical tools for the next level."

"Standing somewhere around 6-8, he passes the eye test and then some, with an awesome combination of size, length, and athleticism"

"runs the floor like a deer, with great quickness and big, long strides, being capable of getting off his feet for highlight reel caliber dunks with the great of ease, either in alleyoop fashion or for a thunderous putback dunk"

"an extremely reserved, quiet person off the court"

"long ways to go to reach his full potential"

"If hes to play some small forward at the next level, its important for him to learn how to use his size better in the paint, as that could be an excellent source of production when being defended by smaller guys"

The player described is Wilson Chandler (see http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Wilson-Chandler-505/), who was drafted 23rd overall by the New York Knicks.

Until Chandler declared for and remained in the 2007 draft, most so-called draft experts didn't list Chandler as a likely draft pick, not even in the 2nd round. Chandler played under the radar for a poor college team. Last March, Chandler signed a 5yr deal with the Denver Nuggets worth $37 million.

Is it possible that the next Wilson Chandler is soon to emerge from the ranks of the unknown?

Marshall's Elijah Pittman (6'9''-F-91) has quietly positioned himself to follow Chandler's remarkable climb.

Taking a closer look using Stats Sheet at http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?add=wilson-chandler&i=1&p1=elijah-pittman we see great similarity.

Player Pittman Chandler
Height 6'9 6'8
Points 16. 14.6
P/40 20.1 18.4
FG% 49.1 45.0
FT% 69.4 65.4
3FG% 37.2 33.3
O Reb 1.6 1.8
Assists 1.53 1.41

If Draft Express simply changed the date of the Wilson Chandler scouting report, they would describe Elijah Pittman in a nutshell. To date, Draft Express hasn't even issued one scouting report on Pittman, even though Pittman's attributes mirror if not exceed those of Chandler. 29 teams and a bunch of scouting services fell asleep on Wilson Chandler in 2007.

In 2013, Elijah Pittman will test the collective memory of NBA executives.

When all is said and done, the next Wilson Chandler will have emerged.
