Branko Cuic
The National League (Div. A) just completed their 3rd round of games on Thursday with Targe-Mures defeating Gaz Metan Medias 79-64 on Thursday night. It was a tough loss for Medias who had started the season very strong defeating Ural of the Russian Premiere League in the Eurochallenge and then opening the regular season with consecutive victories against Giurgiu and Farul Constanta. Playing in Tg. Mures is never easy and Andrija Ciric (199-G-80, agency: BeoExcell) came to play scoring 23 points for Tg Mures while connecting on 69% of his field goal attempts (6-7 from 2, 3-6 from 3) and added 3 assists. The story of game might of been the play of Branko Cuic (197-G-78) who had a near triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. For Medias big man Aleksandar Mladenovic (207-F/C-84, agency: BeoExcell) was strong inside scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds. With the loss Medias falls to 2-1 while Tg Mures joins them also at 2-1.

Timisoara and Ploesti also had tough losses on the road. Timisoara, currently the league's leader in scoring, had an extra period in this one but fell in overtime at Rovinari 90-89. Energia Rovinari got an incredible 41 points from Louis Darby (196-G-84, college: Long Beach St.) including the game winner in the extra frame. While Ploesti fell at the hands of CSM in Bucharest. Darius Hargrove 23 points was not enough as the league's leading scorer Goran Martinic (184-PG-87, agency: BeoExcell) had 34 for CSM Bucharest in the win. Rovinari moves to 3-0, CSM and Timisoara both sit at 2-1, while Ploesti falls to 1-2.

In other action, Giurgiu defeated previously unbeaten Craiova 87-77. Perry Petty (185-G-88, college: UTPA) had 22 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds while Derek Thomas (193-G/F-84, college: Appalachian St.), currently 7th in scoring had 14 in the win. Ivan Miscovic came into the game averaging 15 rebounds per game for Craiova in their opening weeks contests against Timba Timisoara and Pitesti, both wins. Romanian forward Catalin Vlaicu (203-C-86) kept Miscovic off the glass in this encounter, out rebounding him at the 4 spot 6-1, while chipping in with 9 points. Trevor Harvey (211-C-80, college: Florida St.) might of been the X-factor though, coming up huge in the 4th connecting on 5 consecutive baskets for his 15 points as Giurgiu pulled away. For Craiova, experienced lead guard Rade Dzambic (188-G-80, agency: TSS Management, college: NYIT) did what he could for the cause connecting for 17. LeVar Seals (195-G-82, college: De Paul) had 13, and Ionut Dragusin (221-C-85) and Iulian Orbeanu (204-C-91) both had 12. With the outcome of this game both teams moved to 2-1 in the regular season.

Other scores around the league were Oradea over Sibiu 67-58, Oradea moving to a perfect 3-0 record. Pitesti (1-2) made up for a winless start to the regular season and a stinging loss at the hands of Craiova by trumping Dinamo (0-3) 108-46. Farul (0-3) fell to Timba (1-2) 86-53 as newly acquired Zoran Milovic (204-C/F-77) hit for 15 points and 7 rebounds in the road win for his new team. And Cluj continued among the unbeatens at 3-0 besting Ciuc (0-3) 89-73. The league leader in assists Derek Wright (180-G-86, college: Austin Peay St.) had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 dimes in this one but that didn't tell the whole story as his club was a very strong +35 while he was on the floor. Both Cluj and CSM seem to have rebounded after taking tough losses to Giurgiu in the Romanian Cup.
