Ladies and gents, its (The Finnish club basketball season ) over. And we have a new champion, Nilan Bisons (AKA Loimaan KoriKonkarit or LoKoKo). The team was lead by one of the best players I have coached in my entire career: Jeb Ivey. The sharpshooting guard had an enormous season at every aspect of the game. Congratulations to everybody in the team, nut especially to guys I have coached at some point : Mikko Koivisto, Ville 'Moscow' Mklinen and Jeb Ivey. And have to say this much also: If somebody deserved this it was coach Gibson, what a gentleman!

My ToPo ended up 3rd, beating the former champion, Pyrint, in the Bronze medal game. We ended the season with a W, but still.... we felt we could have done more, so much more. Have to be thankful though, worked with a lot of good people during the season and learned so much from them. Well, thats history, back to present and future.

Right now I am at the Finnish institute of Sports (Vierumki).
Assisting the U16 NT as a consultant before the team will be taken over by Coach Pieti Poikola in the beginning of June. As long as Coach Poikola is absent, the team will be coached by Ville Tuominen. Ville was my captain at ToPo 2005-07 seasons...I am getting old.. all these 'young' guys and former players of mine being headcoaches and.. life smiles!

I will be traveling with U16 team to Nordic Championships in Sweden next week. The tournament will take place in my beloved city of Solna (was the HC there for five years).
We will compete agains some good teams, but we have some talent also. Especially our back court can really do some damage.

At the beginning of June I will start my job as the HC of our U20 national team, we will be extremely competitive with some great players, lets see if we have a new Sasu Salin or Petteri Koponen in the team... I will be assisted by Coach Ilpo Rantanen. Rantanen is really experienced and I am really looking forward to working with him.

We will be assisted by Finlands own Pistol Pete, Petri Virtanen, who takes first steps into coaching profession. A GREAT shooter that has played like billions of national team games (OK 130). His firepower has been seen on many occasions at the international level. He has had some huge games in Euro Qualifications. His latest heroics at the national team level took place at the Eurobasket 2011. We were down by eight against Montenegro in the second half and were really out of sync. Coach Dettmann took a look at the bench and told 'the Pistol' to get in to do his thing. Three possessions later the game was tied with the tiny PG running a show. He also nailed the decisive foul shots at the end of the game. 'Cause of this win we were able to make it into next round, which was huge for Finnish Basketball. Coach Virtanen can tell my guys something about scoring and I know, after coaching him for so many years, that he can help all of us in many aspect of the game. Like mentioned before, these are first steps into coaching life for Virtanen, hopefully he will play many more years, for he is a lot of fun to watch (I am a basketball FAN also)

After the U20 program I will move into my traditional summerjob: assistant coach in the national team. It will be, again, an exciting summer, more about that later.

My club address is also clear now. Everybody in basketball circles in Finland seems to know what I am up to, but unfortunately cannot tell it right now right here (my contract says that, sorry). Anyway: Will have a job for two years and an exciting one.
Feeling real motivated!

HYVAA JOULUA- Dec.26, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

Hello there, it is time for a little break, time to spend time with family and relax, but as a coach time to look back, analyze-learn and starting preparations for the games after the break. Basketball has been is a struggle lately, the results ( three game losing streak!) are one thing, but even more worrying is our health situation [read more]
Its been a long time since..- Oct.23, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

No excuses, by bad, mitt fel, mun vika. Have no reason what so ever for this long an absence from this blog. Sorry! Any way, made it with the national team, had some great games (like beating Belgium by 37 and beating Poland at Koszalin) and finished at the top of the group with 6-2 record. So we will be in Slovenia to compete in the Eurobasket 2013 and compete , not participate , is the main word here [read more]
The Next Chapter.- Aug.28, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

Its been a very long time since I last posted on this blog. Ive had a battle back and forth to whether Ill even continue playing the great game of basketball as a professional. Getting to this point has been a lifelong dream of mine, one I have pictured over and over since I was a little kid, so to hang up the sneakers now seems surreal. But it appears that I may not have a choice and Ill let what will be, be and know that it will work out. So here is why Ive come to this point [read more]
