Paul Nelson talks about leaving Dinamo Bucuresti - Mar 30, 2012

In an interview for Mediafax (biggest press agency from Romania) , Paul Nelson (208-C-88, college: Yale) explained why he left CS Dinamo Bucuresti.
'I went to the Dinamo Vice President on Thursday ( 15th of March ) morning to discuss several issues. Mainly, I wanted to have a contract that was signed and stamped by Dinamo, I wanted a work visa so I could legally remain in the country after March 27th, and I wanted a flight home. My flight was scheduled for March 27th, and I was concerned that without a visa and new flight, I could be in some trouble. Dinamo claimed that a visa was unnecessary. They wanted me to finish the season (until May), and then they would provide a flight, yet they did not want to put this promise in writing. Dinamo refused to provide any sort of legitimate contract. They showed me a copy of some contract I had never previously signed. I can't be sure if I had ever seen it before because it was entirely in Romanian. I took it to a lawyer, who told me that there was no mention of a salary or payment method. On the last page of the contract, it was signed by several members of Dinamo, but there was no specified space for an athlete's signature. Instead, there was an outline of a white rectangle, presumably meant to cover some material.

This is true for all the other American players, as well as numerous players from other sports. I don't wish wildly speculate, but the absolute refusal to provide a tangible contract raises questions about evading taxes on players' salaries. The contract was a tremendous issue for me, and I didn't want to continue the season without it. I injured my ankle in the end of February, and risking re-injury would be unwise without the reassurance a contract provides.

The racial incident occurred exactly as it was described by Jerel Blocker and JerVaughn Johnson (an employee of Dinamo had racist remarks about the black american players from the team). The president of Dinamo became furious when it was publicized, and Jerel and I were kicked out of the apartment complex immediately. It's clear that the management of Dinamo has absolutely no respect for its players. The people in charge of Dinamo are not running a reputable or legal organization. I wish all the best to my teammates from the club, but I would advise anyone with any connection with Dinamo to try and disassociate themselves immediately. A Dinamo future is something I wouldn't want my worst enemy to suffer through. 11 Americans went to Dinamo, only one stayed more than a half season, and now all are not on the much clearer can it be?' .

Problems like this with several organization continue to make a bad name for Romanian basketball even if most teams are taking care of the players, help them develop and basically treating them like a professional athlete suppose to be treated.
Paul Nelson never caused a problem and he was a fenomenal player who was 100% professional and played his heart out every game. It's a shame he had to go thru such an experience , one who he'll probably never forget.
