Giurgiu, Romania - Played out on Monday March 12th was a contest of what many viewed as David versus Golliath. On one side, CSS Giurgiu, the club I took over in January this year, the club's first season in the top division. On the other was Golliath, Eurochallenge team and many would say the top club in Romania, Timisoara. The one advantage given to the home town on the banks of Danube River in Southern Romania was that Timisoara wasn't playing a big Eurochallenge game against a team from Israel, France, or Russia. This wasn't a Balkan league matchup that they have been dominating against a team from Serbia or Montenegro. No, this was Giurgiu, who up until this season had played solely in Romania's 2nd division. Perhaps the big club would overlook us? Does David have the slingshot chance at striking the giant in the eye?

Timisoara is every bit as good as advertised. They are NBA huge, boasting several players between 2.10 and 2.20 meters. Their wing player Dominique Archie (204-F-87, college: S.Carolina) is a handful to be certain. At well over 2 meters and guard skills, he was as tall as our position 5 in this contest Catalin Vlaicu (203-C-86). But do not underestimate the heart of this man. He battled with Popescu, Paltisanu, and the giants all evening. The aforementioned Archie was terrific connecting on 6 of 8 three point attempts en route to a big night and Popescu did find opportunities here and there for 17 but much of the others were kept relatively silent. The defense of Vlaicu and Milanovic and Powell helped keep the paint clear, while Brian Burrell (192-G-84, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: UTPA) was active on the glass (8) and stealing balls (5). On the offensive, Raymond Kraemer (193-G-87, college: Nevada) had 28, Burrell and Sims had 19, while Kevin Sims (178-G-88, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Tulane) also found his teammates for a double double with 10 assists helps in large part to excellent two man play with Zoran Milanovic. Giurgiu got important minutes of the bench from Bivolaru, Powell, and Nicolae especially on the defensive end. On this night, the rock in the slingshot struck the giant in the eye and he fell to the ground to the cheers of the hometown faithful: Giurgiu 83 Timisoara 75. So in a Nationally televised game the same lesson was taught from the story of David and Goliath and that is that with hardwork, courage, and faith, anything is possible. It is from humble beginnings that greatness can truely be appreciated. May all the praise and glory be to God.
