THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINE: THE BREATH OF FRESH AIR - Feb 17, 2012

Jeremy Lin
Over the course of the month of February, the NBA has been gripped in what has been termed 'Lin-sanity', which has quickly turned into a global epidemic. Of course, we are speaking of the NBA's newest superstar, Jeremy Lin (191-PG-88, college: Harvard)
The Harvard graduate, and the last Ivy league player to play in the NBA since Matt Maloney (191-G-71, college: Pennsylvania) & Chris Dudley (210-C-65, college: Yale), in 2002-2003, almost 12 years ago.
Coming off of season out west, where he originated, he has seemingly found his home under the bright lights of New York City. The team was mired in a dismal loosing streak when, the call up from the NBDL, where he played 1 game in January only to be called up a few days later, stepped onto the scene to take the unsuspecting NBA by storm.
In the month of February alone, he is averaging a stunning 26 points per game, in the face of injurty to the team's reigning 'go to guy', Carmelo Anthony. In the face of recent activity, the Knick team has enjoyed much better ball movement and EVEN A REJUVENATED Amar''e Stoudamire,, who has been the recipient of many a dish out pass as teams have closed on Lin, who has a very smooth handle of the ball, and is able to penetrate and get to the bucket, forcing defenses to account for him...thus leaving gaping holes for Amar'e to explore and finish with authority.
Much talk has been of how the young Taiwanese-American was discovered, and not allowed to play much in his previous stops of Houston and Golden State. Truth be told, the finger pointing has commenced in the USA as to who failed to find the diamond in the rough, but the REALITY of the situation is that...PLAYERS FROM IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS ARE LARGELY DISREGARDED AND DISRESPECTED AS LEGIT BASKETBALL PLAYERS.
Even when arriving into the NBA, from humble beginnings (schools that produce politicians, presidents and decision makers) the Ivy-leagers, would still be relegated to spot minutes in games that have gotten out of control in the stat sheet. From Matt Maloney (191-G-71, college: Pennsylvania)'s NBA all rookie-2nd Team selection, to Chris Dudley (210-C-65, college: Yale)'s appearance in the NBA Finals in 1999, its as if the 'brightest and best' academically are only to accept being given admission to the show and not the proper treatment that they have been deserving. Properly fitting, the torch has been taken now by Jeremy Lin, who spent his summer in college interning for the California Senator, who has done nothing but pronounce his appreciation and the virtues of persistence and dedication to a dream. There is much to be learned in his journey for each and every one of us involved in Pro Sports.
As it stands, the arenas are experiencing sell out crowds as people flock to get a taste of 'Lin-sanity', in the face of the recent player injuries, coach firings, trade demands and overall lull in level of technical and tactical proficiency; the league is experiencing a breath of fresh air in the way of a NEW FACE, and one that has been eager to exhibit his wares to the eagerly awaiting fan base who have accepted him with open arms, much like 'a refresh' to a cold cup of coffee, Jeremy Lin as renewed a belief in the undying human spirit.
In the words of the late NCAA Champion coach Jim Valvano, 'NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN!'

Not to belittle the other success stories of determination and persistence in the basketball world off late; the Polsh Powerhouse, MMarcin Gortat (213-C-84), continues to dominate the NBA on the statistical end of things now in the top 5 of all players in Double-Doubles on the season.
And on the European side of things, Eric Chatfield (191-G-79, college: N.Mexico), whose career has had various stops in the Middle East, winning championships in Qatar and Lebanon is currently leading the France Pro A in scoring at 21.7 points per game and also pacing in the top 10 of assists per game at over 4 per night.
21 year old Toomas Raadik (202-C-90), is asserting himself in the Estonian Champions league. The 2.02 power forward is leading the league in scoring at 18.4ppg and sits in 2nd place with 1.5 blocks a game.
The theme of the week seems to be DREAMS REALIZED, in both the NBA and European sides of basketball.
Those are the latest THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELIINE, as we round the second half of season and prepare to view teams fighting and posturing for playoff positions.

THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINE- Mar.29, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINE: The old con was called the bait and switch...in that particular type of operation, a faked incident would be used to draw attention of your mark in a manner that they focus on the events that are transpiring and inadvertently taking their attentions off of the prize that you, the puppet master truly desire. All in all, at the end of the operation, the mark is left bewildered, not truly knowing or understanding what truly transpired [read more]
THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINE- Feb.26, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINE The all star break is upon us and the normal expected run of the mill, skills competition, slam dunk contest and the rookie/sophomore challenge will draw loads of fans into the arena and glue them to their television sets. The biggest thing missing is that NO ONE IS DISCUSSING the AGREED UPON LEAGUE WIDE ROSTER REDUCTION! Yes, the NBA received agreement on Friday of a league wide reduction of roster spots for each team [read more]
