When you get snow, make a snowman - Jan 26, 2012

The wintery snow drifts and the sound of the frozen flakes cascading on the apartment window is now becoming a pleasant noise that is becoming more and more like home. Life in Romania has been an adventure for sure. I am becoming more acostumed to the orez y puy (rice and chicken) at the sponsor restaurant. From the ladies at the lunch spot, to the gentlemen that take care of us for dinner after the games, to the support personnel at the arena, the physical therapist, my friend the taxi driver who swears today she is 'no more smoking', Romania is full of smiles, and with caring and passionate people who make us feel very welcome and are all very passionate about basketball.

As I mentioned in an earlier blog, it is the first year in the top division for Giurgiu, and this past week we were on the road in the capital city of Bucharest against 60 years of basketball tradition in Dinamo. The first half was a nightmare; new system, new players, new coach and a TV game on the road. We're still a little robotic, over thinking where am I suppose to be, being overly cautious at some moments, and a group of players that were all trying to hard to impress. We didn't get the ball movement, the offense was stagnant and we were shell shocked early. We regrouped at the half down 21 and cut it to 6 midway thru the 4th, hopes still alive that we could pull the upset. In the end, we fell by 11 but there was many lessons learned from the game and some things we can build from and continue to mature as a unit.

Last night, we took on perenial power Sibiu and this game was dramatic. Again, a slow start to the first half included 3 or 4 warnings from the refs that the next time would be a T. We shared the ball much better, got deeper into our sets, and were starting to see the results of alot of hardwork. Players are starting to buy into their roles, the ball movement and player movement is much improved and there were alot of big moments in the game. Raymond Kraemer (193-G-87, college: Nevada) did a great job shooting a high field goal percentage from 2 and from 3 and being strong on the glass. Catalin Vlaicu (203-PF/C-86) is emerging as a dominant national player and also made several big plays with his physicality, hardwork, and heart. At one moment the power forward was a one man press break and took it coast to coast for the bucket splittin a couple traps along the way. Finishing the game with 6-8 shooting and 3-3 from the line. Zoran Milicec, Brian Burrell, and Kevin Sims were all making plays for their teammates... it's getting better. For Sibiu, experienced forward Cortney Scott did a great job in pick and roll and pick and pop with Jaytonah Wisseh. A huge 3rd quarter surge took Giurgiu up by 7 but Sibiu found a couple things that started working in the 4th and pulled back ahead for the win. It was an emotional game and I was drained by the time it was over but many in attendance told me it was one of the best games they've ever seen the home town play. As much as it stings, knowing that this young club is now moving in the right direction keeps me focused on the task at hand, each day a step ahead and no steps back. We're now 2-2 (including a friendly) after the club had gotten off to a tough 4-11 start prior to changes with players and coach and turn our attention to the winner of 7 of the last 8 Romanian Championships in Asesoft... a gigantic test. Until then, I'll be thinking about rotations and matchups and what key plays to call in the key moments. All the while, the snow drift packs it way outside the front door and the frozen flakes cascading on the apartment window sounds like ocean waves in the distance. Today I'm looking for the corn cob pipe for Frosty. Best wishes from Romania.
