Coach Leroy blogs - Jan 17, 2012
Hello, everybody,
My name is Romain Leroy, 33, basketball coach. And French Nobodys perfect, right ? When the guys from www.eurobasket.com asked me if I could be interested in blogging, I first said to myself -What the hell am I going to write about, and, if I do so, are people going to read and even be interested in my crazy thoughts ? , and then I said yes, basically. My written English might look a bit rusty, but the good point is you can not here my strange accent, coming out of nowhere. Well, from France, in fact, to be sharp.
About me ? I was 17 when fate, destiny, bad luck, call it however you want, gave me my first coaching experience with kids, u10. Sixteen years later, I have a 13 seasons experience with coaching as a full time job, and 8 seasons as a professional coach or assistant coach, in both men and womens hoops. Ill give you further details about my global and humble- experience later.
I just graduated from the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate class of 2009/11-, which was probably the most interesting training course Ive ever had. FIBA is doing weird things sometimes, but seriously : This coaching program is awesome. I mean, Im just an average French coach, and it gave me the opportunity to discover the hidden side of european hoops : Networking, clinics and discussions with great coaches, and some scouting duties during the U16/18/20 EC.
Three summers in a row (Kaunas u16 EC 2009, Vilnius u18 EC 2010, and Bilbao u20 EC 2011), during a little bit more than a week, about 60 young coaches, proposed by their national federations, have been working, scouting, attending clinics and finally got evaluated by hum lets say legendary coaches or next to be. Svetislav Pesic was (and is) the mentor of the program. Janez Drvaric, Pablo Laso, Nihat Izic and other great names were also a part of it. The kind of names you just sit, watch and learn from. Great time with those guys, sharing experiences, and learning. Unique experience and opportunity to meet coaches from other countries (Blue Nation people, if you read this ) : Definitely not a waste of time. Getting out of your own country, if you can, is a need for any coach. In this job, beeing open minded is more than a need. When you start thinking that you have a good knowledge, youre done : Stay home.
Best wishes, and great seasons greetings to all of you : Ballers, coaches, fans, etc.

Germany, Lithuania, summertime- Jul.17, 2012 (by Romain) Hello,
Once again, same sentence to begin my post: "Such a long time...".
Yep, such a long time. While many coaches are actually getting ready for youth EC, or already leading their team to success (Or not... But I don't wanna upset my guys, or basically be the black cat...), I'm off. Offseason mode.

Hello,
Once again, same sentence to begin my post: "Such a long time...".
Yep, such a long time. While many coaches are actually getting ready for youth EC, or already leading their team to success (Or not... But I don't wanna upset my guys, or basically be the black cat...), I'm off. Offseason mode.
In may, I had a great time with France u15W NT. First experience for me, as an assistant coach, with a French NT. We've been working about 15 days together, and played against Germany u16 in Heidelberg. It was really interesting to begin the training camp at INSEP, using those facilities. The players (and us, staff) really enjoyed to live the daily experience of one of the greatest sports place in Europe. A temple dedicated to performance and competition.
After 5 days there, and 7 players cut, the team headed up to Germany, for the annual traditional meeting with their u16 NT. We played 3 games there. 1 loss, then 2 wins. For their first experience with the national jerseys, girls did a great job, worked and lived as a team. It's not that easy for u15 to compete against u16, we did even more than that. I give props to the players, and also to my coach mates and the medical staff, who also did a great job.
The real competition for the u15 NT is coming soon: Next month, we'll play Spain, Italy and Greece during the Friendship tournament. It will be held in Troyes, France, late august.
Our long term goal is to prepare this generation for next year's u16 EC, which will qualify for 2014 u17 World Championships. The more games they play, the more experienced they'll get before the big dance.
After that, what is better than a few vacations? Well, nothing... That's why I've been to Lithuania, I guess, where even God (or call him however you want) is used to play hoops. Kaunas was, once again, the place to be, holding the u17M Worlds. If you have the opportunity to go there, hang around and watch basketball: Do it. There's no place like Lithuania, when it comes to hoops, except NYC maybe.
The competition was quite interesting. Australia played great, really great, but Team USA was physically way too strong. A lot of good prospects are coming. Croatia's Hezonja and Arapovic, Spain's Diop, China's Qi Zhou, Australia's Exum and Simmons, USA's Parker and Okafor... and many more.
Honorable mention to Conner Frankamp (USA, committed to Kansas next season) also. Ending the competition as USA's top scorer, when you're a skinny white 1.85 guy means a lot, in terms of potential. If he's not NBA material after college, we'll see him back in Europe, in Euroleague madness.
What's next? Well training camp in a few weeks, getting ready for the upcoming season, and Olympics on TV.
Have a good summertime, fellas!

Wishlist- May.6, 2012 (by Romain) Whats up Europe and world ? A lot of things happened since my last post, about my next destination, I mean. The deal is quite inked and I feel like Im back in business.

When I began my coaching carreer, years ago, I asked myself what Id like to live as a coach. Not really achievements, but dreams or expectations. A lot of things came to my mind. Amongst everything, beeing a part of a national team program was one of the most important points. It became reality last year, when my coachmate Jakob Hjorth, from Denmark, offered me to join his staff as his assistant on the u15M NT.
We played against other countries, like Scotland, Holland, Iceland, during the Copenhagen Invitational Tournament. The style of basketball played in Copenhagen was really different than what u15 are used to do, in French national leagues. For a foreigner as I was in DK, it was really interesting.
This national team experience will continue this summer, but with my federation, this time. Ill be one of the u15W NTs assistant. Well play one tournament in Germany late may-, and the traditional Friendship Tournament, against Greece, Spain and Italy, in august. Some other great moments to come.
Last but not least, my upcoming team will play the EuroCup for women next season. That was also on my wishlist . I cant wait for the drawing to be done, just to know if well play against any of my FECC coach mates.
I wish you all the best for the end of the season, worldwide. And for the playoffs too. I also wish my man Alessandro Magro and his team (Montepaschi Siena) to write a new page in Italian hoops history, with a 6th national championship in a row...
Talk to you soon !

Beeing a part of it- Mar.28, 2012 (by Romain) Whats up, everybody ?
Its been a while since my last post. The regular season is ending soon for most of you guys. Post-season and playoffs times are coming quick now. Season ending also means national teams, which is my topic today.
After 3 summers in a row with me FECC coach mates (Yeah, once again giving props to my Blue Nation guys), attending u16, u18 and u20 EC, Im now a part of the French youth NT programme. The French Fed asked me to join the u15 W staff for the upcoming summer [read more] | |

The French Fed asked me to join the u15 W staff for the upcoming summer. The team will have two training camp sessions, in May and late August, and will play several friendly games and/or tournaments.
We will have a first camp in May, @INSEP, where we will prepare ourselves for a road trip to Germany. We will play the German u16 W team a few times, and Luxembourg u16 once also. INSEP is probably one of the best places around there to work with athletes. The facilities are just amazing.
The second camp will be held in Troyes, France, in August. We will have to get ready for the annual Friendship Tournament (08/30 to 09/01), where Greece, Spain and Italy will be our opponents. Its a FIBA labelled tournament.
I feel very excited to be a part of this, even if u15 NT doesnt have to play any official competition like u16 and others do. Working for your own country is something special. Just like beeing chosen as an assistant coach is a great opportunity to get some more experience. Ill probably be in charge of the advanced scouting, as Im used to do, but the other tasks are not undefined yet.
The will of the u16 Ws head coach is to prepare our generation u15, I mean- to what is the international level. Next u16 W EC, in 2013, is qualifier to the 2014 World Championships for u17. Therefore, we must work hard this summer to help players to achieve, and to be ready to compete hardly in their first EC. We have talented players in our previsional roster. Its now up to us, coaching staff, to make it work.
Talk to you soon, I wish you the best for the upcoming weeks !
