Hello from Finland!

It is an honor to start blogging here. Let me start with telling something about myself: Have been coaching for 35 years. Started my career with Pussihukat youth program, moved from there to it is a long story. Anyway, have been working in a lot of different places in Finland and also had fantastic five years in Sweden.

This season was supposed to be 'another year at the office' but economical difficulties forced Honka out of the Finnish league and I found myself out of job.
It was kind of nice to be just a fan for couple of months, no pressure, no stress. Was helping a group of talented kids in another Espoo Club: EBT.
That was the only basketball coaching for couple of months and it was good. Really liked working with those kids and to be honest I was real tired after Eurobasket 2011 in Lithuania (More about that later) and got also some much needed rest. But somewhere inside felt the hunger for competition coming back and started to think that maybe then ToPo contacted me and offered me a job as an assistant to my former Youth player Tomi Kaminen (what a great shooter he was!). Though about it for a while, but realized I just had to do it. So off to capital, Helsinki, it was.

Being an assistant coach at club level after 16 years as a headcoach is something new to me but at the same time extremely refreshing and educational.
I am trying to help the head coach and players with a lot of different stuff, starting with players individual development and scouting.
Early in the season we have had a lot of problems with injuries and still looking for extra guys, but the fact is: We have a good team with a lot of quality players, just need to work hard to get this thing together. ToPo is good right now, it will be great, lets see how great...

People have asked me about the highlights of my career and before last summer it was kind of easy : 2003 and 2008 championships in Sweden with Solna Vikings or maybe 'the best team ever', 2009 Solna Vikings , that fought all the possible injuries and problems but never surrended and almost took the back to back titles to Solna. We lost the finals 3-4 to Sundsvall and I have never been prouder of my team than after that season.

Last summer everything changed. A new absolute highlight 'was born'. I have been the assistant coach for Finnish national team since 2004 and it has been a good experience, a lot of good guys, players and staff, a great head coach in Henrik DettmannLast summer a good experience turned into a great one, FIBA decided to expand the tournament, Finland played extra qualifications with Hungary and Portugal, won all our games and soon we were in Lithuania with the big boys.
What happened next, I still not have realized, really. We beat a some good teams , played really well, played as a team, played great D and all of a sudden we were in Vilnius for the second stage. The next thing I clearly remember was that we were playing Slovenia and top 8 was at stake, win there and we would have played Spain in quarterfinal.
OK we lost, but still: 9th in Europe!
What a great summer that was, have to thank everybody involved again!

HYVAA JOULUA!

HYVAA JOULUA- Dec.26, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

Hello there, it is time for a little break, time to spend time with family and relax, but as a coach time to look back, analyze-learn and starting preparations for the games after the break. Basketball has been is a struggle lately, the results ( three game losing streak!) are one thing, but even more worrying is our health situation [read more]
Its been a long time since..- Oct.23, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

No excuses, by bad, mitt fel, mun vika. Have no reason what so ever for this long an absence from this blog. Sorry! Any way, made it with the national team, had some great games (like beating Belgium by 37 and beating Poland at Koszalin) and finished at the top of the group with 6-2 record. So we will be in Slovenia to compete in the Eurobasket 2013 and compete , not participate , is the main word here [read more]
The Next Chapter.- Aug.28, 2012  (by Eurobasket Center)

Its been a very long time since I last posted on this blog. Ive had a battle back and forth to whether Ill even continue playing the great game of basketball as a professional. Getting to this point has been a lifelong dream of mine, one I have pictured over and over since I was a little kid, so to hang up the sneakers now seems surreal. But it appears that I may not have a choice and Ill let what will be, be and know that it will work out. So here is why Ive come to this point [read more]
