Falco starts the right way - Oct 10, 2011

We begin the season with a win. The first game of the season is always tough and very important. It's important in so many ways. It seems to set your teams mentality for the better when you start off with a win. Throughout the whole game it was very intense. PVSK Pannonpower Pecs played with nothing to lose and started the game very hot from 3. Led by Andrija Ciric (199-G-80, agency: BeoExcell). The game turned into our favor and we were able to establish a comfortable lead. Djordje Pantelic (204-F-84) held the paint down for us recording a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds along with 3 blocks. Laszlo Kalman (186-G-72, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) led our team in assists with 9. We gave our fans some excitement when first Zsolt Szabo (202-F-86, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) had a nasty dunk in the first half. If you thought that one was nice the dunk that Tamas Harazin (204-F-85) provided was even more spectacular. This one was a body to body fast break one handed slam. Of course we had to talk about this in the locker room when the game was over haha. I contributed with 15, 4 and 4.

Now we focus our attention to ZTE. They have made a couple additions to their team and are making steps to get better. Going back to ZTE is always fun.... as long as we win haha.

I would like to invite all the readers of this blog to go online and listen to church service. Sunday mornings at 9:00 am or 11:00 am EST. So for me, being over in Hungary I get to stay connected to my church and listen to my pastor and the worship team every Sunday at 5:00 pm over here.

For years I have been playing overseas and the difficulty of trying to find a english speaking church can be exhausting. I have been blessed enough to have found a church that I can watch online. I just think some of my friends and readers of this blog would enjoy it. When I was in the gym this summer in Miami I met a guy named Franco who invited me to church and challenged me in a way that got my attention. I have since committed myself to the Lord and have never been happier.

Also I would like to wish a Happy Anniversary to Pastor Steve and Mary Alessi who are celebrating 24 years of marriage. Thank you for the example you two set.

*******Sadly I have received some horrible news. Chauncey Hardy (183-PG-88, college: Sacred Heart) has past away after suffering injuries in a bar fight in Romania. Keep his friends family and teammates in prayer.

Finals!!!!- May.14, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center)

This season has been a great one. At the beginning of the season the goal for this team was to finish in the top 8. As most already know we finished in first place. We set a Falco record with wins in a season and consecutive wins. It's great to be part of a team with this kind of success. We won our third game against Kormend last night in a very difficult, very tiring game. The end of the game came down to a couple big shots from Tamas Will (196-G/F-87, agency: TSS Management) and Laszlo Kalman (186-G-72, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group). Laci's free throws sealed the win. The whole team contributed in big ways. It was such a relief when the final buzzer went off. It felt like it took me a few seconds to start to celebrate. I started running down the court and didn't know where to go. I just had to hug someone hahaa. It was a lot of pressue off our shoulders and we are all very happy to win that game. Winning that game allows us a little time to rest before the finals so the injuries that our team has collected and fought through can receive some treatments and rest. This is well needed. We have had some unfortunate luck as far as injuries in these playoffs. (Pantelic/sprained ankle, Harizin/foot, Kalman/elbow, myself/dislocated ankle) Still, we have made it to the finals. After the possibility of losing to Kis-Raba menti Takarek Soproni KC in the first round, due in part to the injuries we accumulated and also that Kis-Raba menti Takarek Soproni KC is a good team, to be where we are now is why when that final buzzer went off yesterday it was a release of pressure and it took me a few seconds to react. I'm very proud of my coach and team. We have worked hard all season to get here and now we are!!! We are going to go against a great team in Szolnoki Olajbanyasz. A team who has had a tremendous season themselves. They won the Hungarian Cup and as everyone should be aware of they went to the final four of the Eurochallenge and they were a few plays away from winning their first game against the champion Besiktas Milangaz Istanbul. So congratulations to them for the Eurochallenge. I'm looking forward to putting the whole season on the line against a team who has had such international success as them.

Today is a chill day! I started the day at 9:30 where I went to Derkovits Gyula ltalnos Iskola and spoke to students learning english. So I send a thank you to Veronika and Aletta for setting that up. It was a good time and I hope the kids enjoyed it as much as I did. They prepared some wonderful questions for me. Now that thats finished I'm going to relax at home before going to lift weights and then head over to Sarvar to relax at the spa and get a massage. You know, all that good stuff. Time to take care of my body today before we get into our clash with szolnok.

It's been a long time since I wrote a blog, largely due to the focus I was putting on the season. I have had a few interesting days in that time. I'll share one of them. I was going to lunch one day and there was police on every corner leading up to the restaurant. When I get to the street that the restaurants on it looks like secret service blocking the street off. They make me circle the block and park the next street over. I'm thinking, 'what, is Obama here?' I park the car and start walking to my restaurant where a secret service guy is standing like every bit of cliched security: black shades, suit, ear pieces, speaking in the cuff of his sleeve, the whole nine. As I get closer I see him speak into his sleeve as I get maybe 10 steps closer to him he squares up with me and holds his hand out obviously telling me to stop. I was laughing a little in my mind thinking, did this dude really just square me up?? While I'm thinking that, a rush of photographers are taking flashing pictures of a man walking right towards me. As he gets closer I recognize that it's not Obama but it's the Hungarian President Pal Schmitt. I was very shocked to see a President eating at the restaurant I eat my lunches at. Must be good quality food! I've never seen a president in person so I'm glad I got to see him when I did. If it had been a month later it wouldn't of counted as an active president because he stepped down from office a few weeks later because of a plagiarism scandal. I hope to have a few more interesting times here. Our team is planning to go paint balling at the end of the season. I'm also thinking of going horseback riding through some mountains. Interesting for me. I never thought I would ride a horse let alone get on one and take it through mountain trails. :) We'll see. I hope everyone enjoys my blog as much as I've enjoyed my season in Szombathely.

Today is my sisters Birthday and I have to say Happy Birthday to the most beautiful sister in the world and also send her an extremely proud congratulations for her graduating from Seton Hall University with her masters. I love you Britnee.

It all ends in Debrecen- Apr.24, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center)

Who would have ever thought we would make it to the EuroChallenge Final Four?! Me being a player for Szolnok, I definetly did not think we would make it this far. I know its kinda sad that I would think that right? Now that we have made it this far I know we are capable of writing history and becoming the EuroChallenge champions!! My goal for this years EuroChallenge was to make it past the first round. The previous year we were so close but we came up just a little bit short, and that left a sour taste in my mouth as well as my teammates. We were able to make it past the first round, 'Thank God!' and I was satisfied with that. However we kept progressing and rode the momentum of the first round, started winning more games and before you know it we were in the final 8. When we reached this point in the tournament I felt like a kid in the candy store wanting more and more. I was thinking in my head, ' hey we made it this far why not set your goals even higher'. We did get some help from Aalstar in that round that propelled us into the final 8 but once again thank God haha! Ok so now we made it to the final 8 and we are up against Ventspils, a young and talented team. They were a very tough team to beat at home, and it showed the first game where they dominated us. We were beaten mentally and physically that night. We came back the next game more willing and eager to prove we could win. We won the next two games and celebrated on there home court :) as we wrote history in advancing to the final 4. That brings us now to Debrecen, Hungary where the Eurochallenge final 4 is being held. Its been a long journey from the start and it will all end here!! It will be us Szolnok, Hungary, Chalon, France, Besiktas, Turkey, and Triumph, Russia!
I want to also take the time to thank all of the Szolnok fans, and everyone else you have been supporting us throughout the EuroChallenge. We could not have done it without you. I am looking forward and I know my teammates are looking forward to the weekend where we will fight for the championship. And for those who are hoping that we lose we are representing Hungary, not just Szolnok. It would be a great achievement for a country that does not get as much respect in basketball as the other powerhouses do to win it all. But anyways I think thats long enough :) We are off to Debrecen tomorrow and we will see all you guys, and gals there :) If not at the gym hopefully you will watch it on your TV's. Washingtonians Hooping in Hungary- Jan.4, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center)

The basketball world is a small one. Every new teammate seems to know someone you do. Whether its a college teammate or someone you played with in high school you can usually come across a common person that has crossed your paths. This can be a great advantage for every hooper in landing your next job or gaining information on a country or team. The vast network that connects us all is a powerful tool that should be harnessed by every player. Its all about networking.

I try and help out any player that has crossed my path and gained my respect. If I hear of a job or my team needs a player, I'll do my best to track down someone. So far I have been able to get my college teammate Stephen Sir (195-G-82, college: N.Arizona) on my team in Germany (the best shooter I have ever played with or seen) and now my friend Nik Raivio (192-G-86, agency: Priority Sports, college: Portland) on my current team, Kaposvari KK. We all need a shot, our chance, the big break. If you are in the position to help a hooper you respect, you should do so. Wouldn't you want someone to do the same for you?

This year I am fortunate enough to play with two other Washingtonians. I myself played for Mark Morris High School in Longview, WA while Nik Raivio played for Mountain View in Vancouver, WA and Michael Fey (213-F/C-83, college: UCLA) played for Capital High School in Olympia, WA. Tell me when that has happened before? Three players from the same state all on the same team is crazy. Olympia is only an hour drive from Longview and Vancouver is only 30 minutes. Now we are all hooping in a little city in Hungary. Mike and Nik can ball too, check out their stats. Since my last post we won a tough overtime game where I had 33 point and 6 assists, Nik had 26 points and 5 rebounds, Mike 17 points and 10 rebounds. Not too shabby for the Great Northwest. The victory put us in position to move up to 5th but unfortunately we lost to Falco on the 28th. We are tied for 7th and ready to make a run the second half of the season. Heads Up: We are 6-2 since Mr. Fey showed up.

My immediate network is killing overseas right now; Ruben Boykin (201-F-85, college: N.Arizona) (Greece A1), Kyle Landry (207-C/F-86, college: N.Arizona) (Russia) and Stephen Sir all groomsmen in my wedding and putting in work. My other friends and former Lumberjacks Zarko Comagic (201-F-85, college: N.Arizona) (Poland), Kristian Kuhn (208-C-87, college: N.Arizona) (Germany), Cameron Jones (193-G-89, college: N.Arizona) (NBDL), and Mike Trinh. Omar Krayem (185-G-86, college: Cal.Baptist) (Sweden), Longview legend and LCC star in Sweden averaging 20 pts and 6 assists. Kurt Cunningham (205-C/F-87, college: Boise St.) (France) and Daniel Werner (203-F-87, college: Florida) (Italy) from last years team also moved up to great leagues and are showing they belong in the top leagues in Europe. All these players are in high places and know GMs, agents and coaches throughout each league. These are all people I have played with. I didn't even mention any of the ones I have played against. Send your video out and have your friends put in a good word. What's the worst that could happen?

This blog may seem random but there is a point; use your network to better yourself and help your friends. Not every agent can be trusted and not everyone will be honest about the quality and legitimacy of the team/country youre going to. Before getting yourself in a bad position ask someone who has been there before if it's a good idea. There are MANY things that you should take into account before making a decision on where you're going, not just dollar signs. Veterans have seen most of Europe so don't be afraid to ask. Facebook and other social media platforms are a great way to connect with players and agents. Use all the tools necessary to give you the best chance at a good job. Lastly, you should introduce yourself to as many agents and coaches as possible. You never know where your next job may come from.
