Preparing for Professional Basketball - Jun 15, 2011

My first Blog post and I'm excited! Well I just accepted a professional basketball contract about a month ago now and have been absolutely killing myself since. For the past month my average day has looked a little something like this (It varys day to day):
5am-Wake up eat breakfast and head to work at Planet Fitness 6am-2pm-Working at Planet Fitness where they do not allow us to sit down throughout the whole shift. 3pm-4:30pm- Play pickup with usually the guys from Saint Anselm College, Bentley, Merrimack College, Umass-Lowell and a few pros in the area (Stephen Deluca, Luke Bonner etc.) 4:30-5:30ish-Maybe get some extra shots up 5:30-6:15pm-lift and stretch
This isn't everyday, but Monday through Friday look very similar to this, some things may be moved around but you get the gist of it. If it weren't for my full-time job right now on top of all my hoops workouts I would be able to do more stuff with more energy for basketball, but unfortunately I recently purchased a car before I knew I was going to be heading to Germany, which I am now trying to sell (2000 bmw 328 i) so if you're looking hit me up! Today I am also nervous because I will be putting in my two weeks notice at Planet Fitness. I am doing so because I just had my monthly payment for my car loans and I have camps lined up I where I will be working and am also going to be starting to workout younger athletes for the rest of the summer, so its time for me to start resting more aka getting more than 5 hours a sleep a night so I can kill my workouts and have a great year in Germany. Ever since I got the offer Germany is alll I have been able to think about, I am also very fortunate I have my girlfriend coming with me who has been supportive through it all. The Management of my team over in Germany is helping her find some things to do over there and trying to make it an overall fun experience for the both of us which is really cool of them.
As for when I leave, that date is August 14th. From there I fly out to Dublin, Ireland to get on a connecting flight to Munich, Germany. There is a 2 hour layover in Dublin then I will arrive in Munich where I will be picked up by team managers and be shown around my new city and be moved into my apartment. Unfortunately Kerri will not be coming until about a month after me because for the first month I will be real busy with training camp and other pre season stuff and this will give Kerri a good opportunity to get some quality time with family and friends before we leave for 9 to 10 months. It will be tough for the both of us, but that month will make it all the better when we get to see eachother! Once I arrive in Germany I will be in Augsburg for about 2 weeks, than off to training camp in Italy for about 2 weeks for Training camp.
The people of Augsburg have been unbelievably welcoming so far. I have had about 50 friend requests from people of the town so far before the press release has even come out about the team signing me. They have all been very helpful and have been offering to show me around and welcome me to the city. It makes me feel very welcome and excited to start the season.
From what I have heard Augsburg is an amazing city. It is the 3rd oldest city in Germany and is supposed to be amazingly clean and beautiful. It is just 30 minutes away from Munich where I will definately be going for Oktoberfest 'It is de Greatest Beer in alllll zee World!' -Beerfest. Another thing I was told that got me all pumped was that on a clear day you can see the Alps from Mine and Kerris Balcony at our apartment, SWEEEET!
Kerri and I also started the German Rosetta Stone last night so we can try to learn as much of the language as possible before we head over. I got to say Rosetta Stone does a good job of easing you into it and I feel like although it was just lesson one yesterday me and Kerri picked up a lot. Funny story time! So Kerri was emailing my coach telling him how we got Rosetta Stone to help us learn German and my coach responded 'Thats very good Kerri, I dont know who this Rosetta Stone is, but she seems like a very nice lady and I hope she teaches you well!' haha it was funny, but I have to say my coach so far seems like agreat guy and I am very excited to play for him. He has been amazingly helpful as has everyone in the community!
Thats it for now, I will be posting about once a week or so to keep everyone updated! Hit me up with comments with any comments or even questions you have and I will get back to all of them! Here is the link to my team on Eurobasket (still has the roster from last year until press release comes out) and here is the actual team website!

Tony Gaffney | Heading back to the states...awaiting the next chapter- Apr.9, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) So the season has finally come to an end. Although we had a strong second half of the year we were unable to do all that we wanted to do. I think I had a solid first year individually but always think I could have done better. I am already looking forward to see where we will be next season.

I definitely had a blast in my first season overseas. I made a lot of friends, saw a lot of places, improved different aspects of my game and opened myself up to new experiences. I wouldnt trade my first year here for anything. It is definitely bitter sweet to be heading home as I am unbelievably excited to get home for a bit and see my friends and family and also Kerri and I have a lot of wedding planning to do, but at the same time I am sad to be leaving the town of Augsburg, all of whom I have become close with. It is difficult because who knows where Kerri and I will end up next season and everyone here has been nothing but great to us since day 1.
As for the team and management. I have to say that I was very lucky to be in a situation with such great management in my first season. I got along great with every affiliated with the team and they have taken great care of me since day 1. Anything I have needed or asked for they have taken care of right away. I have formed amazing relationships with everyone and I know we will keep in touch.
To the town of Augsburg. What a beautiful city to live in. Downtown is great and it is definitely an amazing city. An hour away from Munich is great incase we wanted to go into there for a day also. The people are great and we have been invited to many dinners from families who have treated us like their own family. Today even we went to a families house and had an amazing kase spatzel meal that was probably the best meal I have had since coming to Germany. I will definitely miss everyone here.
As for next season I am not sure exactly where we will end up. I want to play at the highest level possible and know I can I just need the opportunity. Now the seasons over and the waiting game begins. I am extremely excited to see my family though especially since we are very close.
Also a shout out to my buddy for getting us tickets to his game (Telekom Bonn Baskets) vs Bayern Munchen. It was a lot of fun for us and Im lucky to have a great friend and am very happy to see him become one of the best players in the Beko BBL.
Thats it for now, I will post throughout the summer! Hope everyone has a great summer and finishes out their seasons strong.

John Bynum | I'm 34 and your point is.....- Apr.5, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) So a close friend of mine the other day asked me what do you do want to do when you finish playing basketball? So a close friend of mine the other day asked me what do you do want to do when you finish playing basketball? I thought for a second, and I really didnt have a clear answer or anything I could really say back to him. It is sort of funny cause my whole life I have been playing this game that I grew up to love and to be honest it is almost that time where I need to make that decision. The door is closing right before my eyes, but trust me it is not shut all the way and when it is, I will be the first to know, instead of the many that have there opinions about the things I do or dont do well on the court and judge me even if they have never been on the court involved in a basketball game (fans). Im very appreciative for what I have accomplished coming from little Visalia, California and playing division 2 basketball, starting in the regionaliga and working my way up to the BBL. So what will be my options after the season, I know one option it wont be, it will not involve me retiring and not playing when I am still as athletic as most players that I play against each week. When I feel ...and I mean when I feel like I cant help out a team then I will not play anymore. So with that being said that answers the question about me not playing next season. But there will be a time when that day comes when I need to make that decision but that time is not now. It really seems like yesterday I just got into the country and ordered a peporoni pizza and was disspointed cause there were peppers on my pizza. Time has flown by and I cant even tell you where my 20s went but at the same time I wouldnt have traded this experience for anything in the world. Sometimes I know I take this career for granted by the things I do, but without basketball I wouldnt have got to know many of my friends I have to this day and saw many of the places that many can only dream of seeing on television. So yea this blog session was about me not retiring but guess what its my blog and I can write what I want to. Last thing as far as answering my boy who asked me the other day what will I do when I finish playing, Ill answer that when I am actually finished, but until that time comes find me on a court here in Germany bruh.. Take care everyone and Ill talk soon.
its my blog and if you dont like it dont read it John Bynum (191-G-78, agency: Scorers 1st Sportmanagement, college: Metro St.)

Trying to finish strong- Feb.20, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) Whats up everyone. Its been awhile since my last post so I wanted to fill everyone in. Recently we have been playing much better and have a legit shot to stay in Pro A despite the fact that a lot of people had no doubt at all we would move down to pro A due to lack of experienced players. Whats up everyone. Its been awhile since my last post so I wanted to fill everyone in. Recently we have been playing much better and have a legit shot to stay in Pro A despite the fact that a lot of people had no doubt at all we would move down to pro A due to lack of experienced players. This is understandable considering starting the season we were the only team in the league without 1 player who had pro A experience. I think as the season has gone on we have improved and made the adjustments necessary to become a better team. We are competing every game and have had a lot of games that would have resulted in wins had a few things gone our way. All in all this has been a great 1st year overseas. I would love to win more games but I have enjoyed my time spent here in Augsburg and the people have been great. Personally I think I adjusted well especially since I did not play basketball for a year after graduation from college. I am looking forward to see how the end of the season plays out. Expect to see us make a run! I am very fortunate and thankful to be doing what I love for a living and am hoping to keep playing as long as my body allows me too and the opportunities present themselves!
I will check back in at the end of the season but for now have a great one everyone! Finish up your seasons strong and Ill check in later!
