Even though there are two matches involving teams from the upper side of the standings, CSU Asesoft Ploiesti versus CS Gaz Metan Medias and CS U-Mobitelco Cluj Napoca versus BC Steaua Turabo Bucuresti, the most exciting two matches of round 30 will be CSU Sibiu against BC Arges Pitesti and CSM Oradea versus CS Otopeni. And this only because the order of the first five after the regular season is already fixed: Ploiesti will win the regular season, Cluj will the the runner-ups, Medias will finish third, Steaua fourth and Mures fifth. But for the other 3 places which grant a place in the play-offs, 4 teams are still fighting, and these are Sibiu, Otopeni, Pitesti and Oradea!
The first match to be analyzed is CSU Sibiu versus BC Arges Pitesti. After 29 rounds, Sibiu is ranked 7th, with 16 wins and 13 losses, while Pitesti is ranked 6th, with 17 wins and 12 losses. In their first meeting earlier this season, Pitesti won on home ground 91-81, after a very good match done by Donte Gennie and Darko Vujacic. Looking at the teams last rounds results, one might say that both teams will offer some high quality basketball: CSU Sibiu dramatically won on the road against Steaua 81-79, after they have done an impressive 4th quarter, 23-9, while Pitesti offered only the fifth defeat this season for reigning champions Ploiesti, 88-78. It is difficult to give a prognostic, but the fact that they play a more efficient basketball since Audrius Prakuraitis has been replaced by Catalin Vulc as coach, and that they will probably play in front of 3,000 fans in the Transilvania sports hall in Sibiu, might be an advantage for Sibiu.
The other interesting match from this last round will be the match between CSM Oradea and CS Otopeni. Before the last round of the regular season Oradea was ranked 8th, with 16 wins and 13 losses, and Otopeni was ranked 9th, with the same record. The first match from this season has been won by Otopeni, 88-86, with some strong performances from Cortney Scott and Aleksandar Belanovic, while Andelko Mandic and Nemanja Maric did some good job for the losing team. Last round, Oradea lost 63-73 on the road against BC Timisoara, while Otopeni won on home ground, 85-77, against Craiova. Otopeni could have secured its place in the playoffs, but a surprisingly loss in the 27th day, on the road against Miercurea Ciuc drastically reduced their chances to compete in the superior phase of the championship.
As these 4 teams are fighting for 3 places, lets take a look what the outcomes of the results will be. Before this, it is worth mentioning that Pitesti already has a place granted in the play-offs, but they will for sure want to avoid Ploiesti in the first round.
If Sibiu and Oradea win, these two teams will join Pitesti and the other 5 teams in the play-offs, Otopeni will face Brasov in the first round of the play-outs. The order of Sibiu, Pitesti and Oradea will be made on the difference with which Sibiu will defeat Ploiesti. If Sibiu will win with more than a 10-point margin, they will finish 6th, Oradea 7th and Pitesti, else Pitesti will finish 6th, Oradea 7th and Sibiu 8th.
If Sibiu wins and Otopeni does as well, then Sibiu will be 6th (if they win mith a +10 margin, else theyll be 8th), Pitesti will be 7th and Otopeni will be 8th.
The third possible scenario, if Pitesti and Oradea win, Pitesti will finish the regular season ranked sixth, Oradea will be the seventh and Sibiu will be the last team to qualify for the playoffs. The last possible scenario means wins for Pitesti and Otopeni, a case in which Pitesti will finish 6th, Otopeni 7th and Oradea 8th, with Sibiu playing in the play-outs.
All matches of round 30 will start on Saturday, 2nd April, 18:00.
