It's about that time for a another blog! Even though I am starting think nobody really reads these. I guess what I am trying to say is leave a reply good or bad, or even better give me some questions to talk about in my next blog! Things here in Finland are really starting to heat up, on the Basketball Court that is! God knows it's not getting any warmer outside! It's currently -15 degrees celsius and rumor has it, that it's been close to -40c in some places! It's odd, because this past week it's been really sunny and it's been getting colder! I think it has something to do with the lack of moisture in the air, but what do I know? I just hope it starts to heat up off the court soon, summer's almost here!

There's currently 9 games left in the regular season and we are currently on a 5 game winning streak! We have a tough and important match this Saturday, and with these last 9 games we have a great opportunity to move into the 2nd place in league so ever game is crucial. 2nd place would mean that we would play vs the 7th seed in the first round of the playoffs and have home court advantage. As for the VTB League, our first year in the league has been a learning experience. Last week we lost in Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk Ukraine. In a match we should won. We still have two more games left against very good clubs in CSKA Moscow and Unics Kazan. We are still looking to capture our first win in the league, even though these next two matches we will be huge underdogs, I have hope we will. Speaking of the UNDERDOGS! I am a proud University of San Diego alumni today, we upset the Nations 23rd ranked Saint Mary's Gales! We have a young team and it's been a tough year for the team, but last night we showed our potential against a solid SMC squad! I hope that this win will give us the confidence and hunger to work even harder. Congrats to the entire SD organization especially the two seniors, Devin Ginty (187-G-89)y and Matt Dorr (193-G-88) make it a special senior year fellas! Fight On Toreros!!!

I want encourage all the professional athletes out there, to give back to the youth in your communities! I feel like there a lot of youth today who could use a mentor, role model, or friend! John Wooden said it best 'Young people need models not critics.' There are so many distractions now days. I can't imagine the stress parents have raising children in a world where, any and everything is right at their fingertips! I have started The Academy of Future College Athletes www.afcathletes.org. AFCA is a non-profit organization that strives to help athletes not just be better players but better people. As an organization we are still young, less then a year old but it's been going well and have been getting a lot of positive feedback. I am really excited for AFCA's future and the lives it will change along the way. It's always great to speak with other professional athletes giving back and working with youth in their off time. I feel it's our obligation to give back and provide the same support and assistance we received, if not more!

Life always seems to throw a curve ball when we least expect, it can really put things into perspective. I want to send my condolences to a great friend Nick Lewis (207-F/C-83, agency: Impact Basketball, college: San Diego) and his family. They recently lost an incredible woman and beautiful spirit, to a long battle with Cancer! RIP Melodie Lewis!! It's been over 5 years since college, when Melodie's Cancer first surfaced. It was her battle then, that gave us the courage and motivation to overcome anything that we experienced in basketball or life. I remember how we all shaved our heads in support of her fight, and how she helped to unite our team! We went from a team of individuals, to a family of brothers! She will be truly missed but always remembered!

Hello there, it is time for a little break, time to spend time with family and relax, but as a coach time to look back, analyze-learn and starting preparations for the games after the break. Have no reason what so ever for this long an absence from this blog. Sorry!

Any way, made it with the national team, had some great games (like beating Belgium by 37 and beating Poland at Koszalin) and finished at the top of the group with 6-2 record.
So we will be in Slovenia to compete in the Eurobasket 2013 and compete , not participate , is the main word here.

The biggest joy for me was that we did something I did not believe we could do: We played good, momentarily great, basketball without injured Teemu Rannikko, who has been the brains and backbone of the team for so many years. If someone had told me two years ago we would beat these teams without Teemu

Well, other guys stepped up, Petteri Koponen took even one more step being, in my eyes, the MVP of our group, Shawn Huff was also sensational, Sasu Salin was himself, Mikko Koivisto was on fire, Tuukka Kotti and Gerald Lee took care of business inside the paint and the biggest surprise to me was Matti Nuutinen, who played like a seasoned veteran.

Our team play worked, we moved the ball, scored a lot (2nd most points in qualifications): We were really hot from behind the 3p line with 42,6 % (best team in competition) with Shawn huff (57,6%), Mikko Koivisto (56%) and Roope Ahonen (53,3%) being in top four in 3p% category.

The qualification campaign was a big time success also publicity-wise.
There were a lot of spectators in our home games and "susijengi / wolfpack" got a lot of positive publicity.
We can already see that more kids start basketball, Finnish media is still (after qualifications) interested in basketball, it is like a positive snowball (no, we do not have snow at the moment) rolling. Clubs are getting stronger and better, more money (hopefully) is invested into basketball.

Talking about a positive snowball: Have to use the opportunity to congratulate Joensuun Kataja here, the team is coached by my fellow assistant coach from the national team, Jukka Toijala. Kataja beat Aliaga in Eurochallenge qualifications. Great job everybody up there!

Tapiolan Honka, back to routines.

My club program Tapiolan Honka has already started, of course. It has been pure pleasure so far (except yesterdays loss). Professional organization, great players and a clear vision for the whole club.

We are playing in the second level and our goal is make it back to the league. We are 2-1 at the moment, and will face a real tough schedule, out of our next four games three will be road games against top level teams: Oulu, Syntsalo, Porvoo.
The level in this league is surprisingly good, one more sign of the level of our beautiful game is Finland. All the teams have at least two good Finns and when You add 2-3 Americans and good coaching..

We, as a team, do realize that it will not be an easy season, but we will be OK. We have enough experience to understand what we will have to do.

The Next Chapter.- Aug.28, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center)

Its been a very long time since I last posted on this blog. Ive had a battle back and forth to whether Ill even continue playing the great game of basketball as a professional. Getting to this point has been a lifelong dream of mine, one I have pictured over and over since I was a little kid, so to hang up the sneakers now seems surreal. But it appears that I may not have a choice and Ill let what will be, be and know that it will work out. So here is why Ive come to this point.

After hitting the deer in Hungary I thought it was best for my family and I to play somewhere else. The accident not only left me with a fear of deer on the road (or brown bushes) but cost a lot financially. The Hungarian government tried taking away my license for 3 months, making me pay for the deer I killed (up to $5,000) and also threatened to make me pay for the teammate that was riding with me hospital bill. They said I was liable because there was a deer warning sign a few KM back and because I was liable I also had to pay for the car I just totaled. Apparently insurance wouldnt cover it.

So after that great experience I went to Finland. I wanted a change in scenery and hopefully springboard my career to where I could get a good job for next year. Unfortunately I chose the wrong situation to do so. While my team was talented, we were unfortunately not compensated in a timely matter. The financial strain on my family (wife and 2 kids) was too much after the accident and not being paid that we felt it was best to leave Finland on the flight that was already purchased from Hungary. This was a very tough decision for me but I could not put my family at risk any longer being so far from home without a reliable income.

I have now moved to plan B, C and maybe even D. I have my door wide open to continue playing for the right situation. My family and I love to travel and would jump at the opportunity to continue living abroad. That is plan A. Plan B is not so bad either. I have started a management company with my Dad which owns and operates three companies. I was able to come home and get right to work which has been a major blessing. Its been a lot of fun putting my MBA education to work in a legitimate business. My basketball academy, Roots Basketball, has unfortunately suffered because of the other business but is starting back up next month. We will have clinics in the months of Sept and October and we are expecting over 40 kids. Lastly, if I cant play overseas I want to start an IBL team in my hometown and run it under a European model, sponsors on jerseys and rely on advertising for income not only ticket sales. No matter what Im going to find a way to keep playing competitively.

As August comes to a close I get a major itch to take an offer. So far I have had Hungary, Turkey, Romania and few other small leagues make offers but nothing that will pull me away from my business endeavors. Below are updated highlight tapes and game film for those who want to check it out. I finished with 17.9 PPG and 5.9 ASST in Hungary while averaging 13.3 PPG 3.1 ASST on 55% from the field, 48% from 3 and 93% from FT in Finland. The year was a great learning experience and I look forward to whatever may be next in my life.
