Tough times - Jan 9, 2011
Hello everyone Happy new Years and welcome to another one of my blogs, if this is your first time visiting my blog I will like to briefly introduce myself to you. My name is Glenn Stokes (170-G-76, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: American), I am a small point guard who plays for BS Weert in Holland. This is my ninth season as a professional basketball player overseas. In my blogs, I would like to inform anyone out there who is interested in becoming a professional athlete overseas what it takes as well as the ups and downs thats comes with it. Secondly, I will like to help those who have supported and followed my career keep up with my whereabouts. Lastly, I would like to share my beautiful experiences and my life abroad.
In this blog, I will like to talk about the toughest and most frustrating time of my career. We just started the new year with one game on the road in Zwolle and a home game vs. Leiden, splitting the two keeping us in 5th place in the league. Some people look at things in many ways, some might say you guys are one game out of 4th place, Glenn you are leading the country in scoring and shooting the ball pretty well while also in the top 4 in assists, and then ask why am I frustrated with this season. Everyone knows that basketball is a team sport unlike tennis, boxing, golf etc. and knows that it takes all twelve guys to be considered a good team and to have a great season!
This season is like no other for the simple fact that I came here in great shape as usual and had a very good preseason . In the preseason we had a few guys injured including me and our backup point guard Mitchel Kouwijzer (190-G-87, agency: Court Side), which forced me to play with a hip injury which led to the current injury I have been playing through since the last one or two preseason games. Twenty games into the season and I am still dealing with this minor but major groin injury. The reason I say it is minor, is because I am able to walk, jump and run which means I could Play, there is no major tear or damage it just hurts and prevents me from moving laterally as fast as Im use to moving. It is a major injury I say, because it has hindered me the whole season from being the player that I am. I am an explosive offensive player and a pesty defender, but by not being able to move laterally I consider myself less than half the player I am. Although Ive had a few good games this season, I have yet to have a Glenn Stokes like game instead I have had a few really good quarters. This is why I say Im going through a really tough time now, because I leave games feeling and knowing that I could do more to help my team win but physically its not possible until I am completely healed and healthy.
So, now the medical team and I are looking for other solutions to get me back such as pool workouts and a lot of different stretches to build up the muscle and flexability in my upper leg/groin. I will like to be back to myself in the next week or two to help my team make a run to finish the regular season and reach our goal to be in the top 4 and put ourselves in a position to contend for the Dutch Cup and Dutch Championship.

Herre in the Cibane league my team finished strong to end the regular season, clinching another regular season title, earning the #1 seed and having home court throughout the playoffs... We did so by beating our cross town rival UAZ Tuzos de Zacatecas three straight games. Although the games were not easy we were able to find a way to get the necessary wins by fighting hard as a team and staying together throughout the ups and downs even when Tuzos went on runs and actually went up by 21 points late in the 3rd quarter.... Before the three games vs. Tuzos, I was really worried about our team chemistry and our fight as a collective group! I believed we were definitely a good team and had a chance to contend for the title but I wasn't as confident as I am now. I think those games were the turning point for the Mineros de fresnillo and they helped build the trust and confidence in each and every player on the roster. The thing that plays a great part in being able to fight and comeback late in the 3rd quarter is the trust and belief in not only ourselves but also in our fans... Our fans ( the best fans of all of Mexico) travelled 45 minutes away to not only support us but we actually had more fans than the home team of Zacatecas. Not only were they in the building but you heard them chanting and cheering us on ( min-er-os, MIN-ER-OS) at a time when it was easy for them to lose belief and for us to give up.... it felt like a home game really! After those games was when I said we are ready to win another championship ( 5 days after questioning it).
Here we are ready for the playoffs and ready to play against Tuzos AGAIN!!!! Although Tuzos is a very tough team to beat, I'm very happy and confident to have them in the 1st round not only because I think we are a better team but because we will basically have all home games in the series..
Game 1 was played on August 1st in a gym filled with Zacatecans, who were there to see a great game between two rivals. For me it already felt like a championship game, I felt the energy in the gym from when I first arrived to get my pre game shots up.. Before every game dating back to College I've always been the first guy in the gym getting up shots and trying to get into my beast mode rhythm before everyone else arrives. Typically, I shoot anywhere from 400-650 shots before any other player steps on the court. Here in Fresnillo there is about 30-75 ppl already in the gym early actually watching me get into what I call rhythm nation and asking for autographs and photos before the gym starts.. Earlier that day I did something else that I do on every game day dating back to my very first year as a professional basketball player where I watch game tape or highlights on YouTube while eating my pre game meal.... On this particular day I watched AI in the finals against the Lakers because just minutes before, I actually tweeted 48 was the number for tonight's game and as you all know AI had 30 at the half and 48 for the game as the 76ers stole game 1 in LA! By tweeting that and feeling that I needed to set the tone on offense by getting a great jump start rather than looking to get others involved early, I WAS FOCUSED!!! I was in attack mode from the jump, I started the game off with and and 1, then a layup and by the end of the 1st quarter I was told I had 16pts.. By being aggressive it opened up the court and my teammates were also able to get easy buckets as well which rolled over to our defense allowing us to dominate Tuzos and grab a big lead early.. That big lead afforded me about an unusual 4 minute break in the 2nd quarter (when I usually play games without sitting besides half time and during timeouts). Although I had a target in my mind of 48, it felt good to sit back and relax and enjoy this lil break while I can knowing we had another game the next day.. When I checked back into the game I was still in attack mode pulling up on 1 on 2's and everything. At the half I had 27 points and we were up by 17.. So in my mind I'm thinking I need a big 3rd quarter to stay on track to hit my target.. Long story short the game ended up being a blowout where at a time we were up by almost 40 and that 48 was looking kinda grim because I knew I was gonna sit most of the 4th quarter.. I ended up with a loud 37 points and we won game 1 113-87..
In preparation game 2 was very similar to game 1 other than the HUGE fact that the balls were late getting to the gym, therefore I was only able to get up about 150 shots before everyone else started shooting although I was there 45 minutes before. I wouldn't say I'm superstitious but I definitely believe in getting a good warm up before each game, so I'm alil upset about the fact that my pre game is alil off! All in all it didn't effect my mental approach to going at Tuzos neck, I was again in attack mode. I didn't tweet a number before the game but I had a few guys say we need 40 tonight from you.. The game went the same way as the first game with us taking control early and heading into halftime up 58-39. The stat guy came to me and said that I had 6 3pt shots in the 1st half and he asked how many will I finish with because before the game he said how many and requested 6, so with me having 6 at the half he said 10 or 12 for the game. I just laughed! Second half was like the first, we dominated and went up by as much as 34 points and I was again in a position to rest by sitting out the beginning of the 4th quarter.. We ended up winning the game by 20 plus and I don't know what I ended with but if I had to guess I'd say I had 36 or 38pts..

Hello world! Welcome back to my blog here on eurobasket.com. If this is your first time reading my blog, I would like to welcome you as well and introduce you to the Glenn Stokes blog. I would also like to tell everyone who has reached out to me via twitter and email with questions asking for advice, I strongly encourage it because my blog is not only used to share my experiences while playing basketball overseas but also used my to give advice to anyone looking for help to get his/her feet in the door or just need some advice before starting their journey as a professional athlete abroad.
Today, I will be updating you on how my season is going here in Mexico. This season started with us playing on the road against Aguascaliente. After a long day/night of traveling ( flight and 6hr bus drive) we took a 2 and a half hr drive to Aguascaliente. In game 1 I was really limited being that I had a tight back and the court was very slippery with me playing in new shoes. I'm not a man who gives excuses so instead I will give them credit for holding me to 11 points and handing me and my team the loss... In game 2 it was alil different I moved alil better and finished with 24 and help secure the win for my team, making us 1-1. The next week we hosted Monterrey and I must say I was back in the groove and my team played great. For that weekend I finished averaging 31 and 11 assists and we went on to be 3-1. Bringing us to a much anticipated rivalry between two champions. My team The Minerals of Fresnillo winning the championship in 2010 and the Madereros of Durango who won the whole thing last year (please note that me or my other American did not play last season). Durango, who has an even better team than last year has been running through the league with a 4-0 record while winning by 40 or more points in 3 of the 4 games. My team is full of players who are fairly new to the team and havent quite gelled together yet. Game 1 started with Durango having control throughout the whole first half and being up 9 at the half. In the second half we made a run and cut the lead to one after 10 straight points by me.. Then the champs went on a run and pushed the lead back to seven and then both teams exchanged baskets.. It wasn't until the 5min mark in the fourth quarter when we Gained control and closed the game by winning it by four points. I ended the game with 33 and 12 assists. As for game two it was pretty much the same as game one with Durango having early control and leading by 9 going into halftime.. In the second half we used great team defense to stop them and my coach put the ball in my hands and I had 35 in the 2nd half while finishing with a season high 47 points and securing the win and pushing my teams record to 5-1 and making us first place in the league.. Our last game was last night against our cross town rival Zacatecas, the city in which I play for in the LNBP. It was a packed house with both fans from Zacatecas and fans from Fresnillo, loud throughout the whole game. We took early control and kept it throughout the first half being up by 14 at halftime. In the second half we stayed in control but Zacatecas fought back and cut our lead to as low as 8 points but with again a great team effort we prevailed and won the game by 16 and I finished with 38points. Now we stand alone in 1st place at 6-1.

WELCOME back to my blog and hello to everyone new to my blog here on eurobasket.com, my name is Glenn Stokes. I am an american professional basketball player going into my 10th season overseas. I have been to over 40 countries and have played in countries such as Finland, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Mexico and Holland.
This is my 3rd year blogging and my purpose for blogging is to share my experiences and to educate the young, helping them to reach their full potential while following their dreams and becoming a successful professional both on and off the court. In this blog I will first talk about what I have been up to since my season in Mexico ended. In addition, since the summer is about to start I will touch on the topic of being positive and continuing to put in that work although sometimes you get to feeling like your handwork isn't paying off and you are contemplating getting out of the game being that you feel like the person representing you is full of $h!T and your on an emotional roller coaster.
Since being knocked out of the playoffs in the LNBP in Mexico, I took a couple weeks off from basketball just to enjoy to time to travel and visit love ones and just taking alil time off from ball being that although it is my passion it gets alil stressful. Sometime you just have to put it down even if its just to get your thoughts and plans for your near and long term future goals in order. After my very short hiatus from the gym, I eased back into it playing alil pick up just to stay in game rhythm just in case a good opportunity came my way. I also partnered up with a friend of mine in Orlando. FL who is a long time friend of mine and the founder and CEO of L.A.B sports (learning at its best). At L.A.B we run youth leagues, high school leagues, pro am leagues, womans leagues, basketball clinics, individual, team, group trainings, several basketball camps, all sports camps and fun camps throughout the summer and we have started a girls basketball academy 1st to 12th grade girls as well as mentoring the youth.... So I've been pretty busy! I just recently joined the Minerals de Fresnillo in the Cibane league in Mexico.. I played for this same team in 2010, when we won the championship and I won MVP of the league.. So im excited and looking forward to winning the league again. We play our first game tonight in Aguascalientes.
Finally, I would like to talk to those of you who are going through what every guy who plays basketball for a living goes through..... That time of the year when you are excited about playing but you have nowhere to play! We all have been there, dealing with sorry agents with no pull or maybe even good agents worrying about the big name guys. WORKING HARD ON THE TRACK, IN THE WEIGHTROOM AND ON THE HARDWOOD, for what? Agents lying saying they are in contact with some teams just to keep you at bay and not conversing with you for months until you shoot them emails about going in a different direction and possibly making changes in your representation... Everywhere you go your getting asked the same questions.. Where are you playing next and when are you leaving? Your reply is ' I don't know'. In my 10 years of playing I can honestly say that I didn't have to worry about this only one time...... Every other year I was stuck like you, playing the waiting game, answering the annoying questions, watching others sign who i felt I was better than, contemplating getting a real job after feeling like this damn hardwork isn't paying off.. Losing motivation and even finding myself slacking a bit til getting a grip and taking the attitude of I'm gonna work harder because when I get that call not only am I gonna kill I will make those who passed up on me regret it...
My advice to you guys who are playing the waiting game and contemplating on getting out.... If you really love this game and enjoy the perks of balling overseas keep your head and keep cool... Never stop believing in yourselves and work harder when your mind is telling you to quit! REMEMBER what you put in is what you will get out! In this game only the strong survives!! Dont be a lil quitter instead be a BIG hitter..
