Home away from home....i think???? - Nov 16, 2010

well im back on my blog grind and hope everyone is doing alright. well its been about a week or so since i last talked to you guys but let me start off first by saying thank you to eurobasket for staying patient with me and letting me write my own blog and share some of my experiences with other players from across the world. It is nice being able to read other players experiences and this was a great idea to see how each player lives in different parts of the world. Well i have posted several blogs since i started last season and most of the times my blogs were talking about experiences that i have shared since i have played overseas, now i kind of wanna turn the tables and just speak and just reflect a little bit. Well for the most part everybody thinks thats it is easy for the most part being overseas Looking back at all my years I think where has it gone. This life flashes right before your eyes and honestly i dont know where my 20's went.. it flew by. This life aint for everyone, but it is what you make it. Imagine this people, living city to city every year, not knowing where the hell home is. Trying to figure out who you can trust, who you cant trust, if my money is coming on time, if my team is gonna release me, is my agent really working hard for me and the failed relationships you may come across throught your career? I had someone during after my season ask me where home was, and i looked at him and said man I really dont know. I have played in 7 different cites in Germany in my whole career. I have had contracts in 4 different countries and where is home???? I go back to my hometown in the offseason but can i call that home anymore cause i spend more time in Germany than i actually do in the city i was raised in, and even when i go home during the summertime I cant relate to my friends cause we living two different lifestyles or they either married, and in a different stage in there life than i am. Its always fun seeing friends, but it it aint the same talking like it is talking and remising about something that you did with one of your teammates during the season and your friend from home has there mouth open on a couch with there wife shaking there head thinking in there head when are you gonna grow up (smh). I have met some very interesting people throughout my career, some i would love to forget and some that have made a life long impression, but even so I still got to ask myself from time to time is time ever going to slow down. I think about my journey and all the places Ive been from time to time and think about some of my teammates and other friends i have developed over the years and laugh sometimes. I thank god for blessing me with a long career which hasnt always been easy. Im 32 now, and time is not waiting on anyone and I am not getting any younger. I know i really didnt touch base on the topics i talked about above, but in reality i just wanted to give an idea of some thoughts that may have gone through your guys minds as well or what a new player can expect... In my opinion this has been a learn as you go experience just like life.. i wouldnt change it for anything in the world but at the same time I do ask myself what am I really doing with my so called life (lol) anyhow, thanks for blessing me with your time if you read this. stay focused and positive in any way that you can... god bless!!!!

Tony Gaffney | Heading back to the states...awaiting the next chapter- Apr.9, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) So the season has finally come to an end. Although we had a strong second half of the year we were unable to do all that we wanted to do. I think I had a solid first year individually but always think I could have done better. I am already looking forward to see where we will be next season.

I definitely had a blast in my first season overseas. I made a lot of friends, saw a lot of places, improved different aspects of my game and opened myself up to new experiences. I wouldnt trade my first year here for anything. It is definitely bitter sweet to be heading home as I am unbelievably excited to get home for a bit and see my friends and family and also Kerri and I have a lot of wedding planning to do, but at the same time I am sad to be leaving the town of Augsburg, all of whom I have become close with. It is difficult because who knows where Kerri and I will end up next season and everyone here has been nothing but great to us since day 1.
As for the team and management. I have to say that I was very lucky to be in a situation with such great management in my first season. I got along great with every affiliated with the team and they have taken great care of me since day 1. Anything I have needed or asked for they have taken care of right away. I have formed amazing relationships with everyone and I know we will keep in touch.
To the town of Augsburg. What a beautiful city to live in. Downtown is great and it is definitely an amazing city. An hour away from Munich is great incase we wanted to go into there for a day also. The people are great and we have been invited to many dinners from families who have treated us like their own family. Today even we went to a families house and had an amazing kase spatzel meal that was probably the best meal I have had since coming to Germany. I will definitely miss everyone here.
As for next season I am not sure exactly where we will end up. I want to play at the highest level possible and know I can I just need the opportunity. Now the seasons over and the waiting game begins. I am extremely excited to see my family though especially since we are very close.
Also a shout out to my buddy for getting us tickets to his game (Telekom Bonn Baskets) vs Bayern Munchen. It was a lot of fun for us and Im lucky to have a great friend and am very happy to see him become one of the best players in the Beko BBL.
Thats it for now, I will post throughout the summer! Hope everyone has a great summer and finishes out their seasons strong.

John Bynum | I'm 34 and your point is.....- Apr.5, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) So a close friend of mine the other day asked me what do you do want to do when you finish playing basketball? So a close friend of mine the other day asked me what do you do want to do when you finish playing basketball? I thought for a second, and I really didnt have a clear answer or anything I could really say back to him. It is sort of funny cause my whole life I have been playing this game that I grew up to love and to be honest it is almost that time where I need to make that decision. The door is closing right before my eyes, but trust me it is not shut all the way and when it is, I will be the first to know, instead of the many that have there opinions about the things I do or dont do well on the court and judge me even if they have never been on the court involved in a basketball game (fans). Im very appreciative for what I have accomplished coming from little Visalia, California and playing division 2 basketball, starting in the regionaliga and working my way up to the BBL. So what will be my options after the season, I know one option it wont be, it will not involve me retiring and not playing when I am still as athletic as most players that I play against each week. When I feel ...and I mean when I feel like I cant help out a team then I will not play anymore. So with that being said that answers the question about me not playing next season. But there will be a time when that day comes when I need to make that decision but that time is not now. It really seems like yesterday I just got into the country and ordered a peporoni pizza and was disspointed cause there were peppers on my pizza. Time has flown by and I cant even tell you where my 20s went but at the same time I wouldnt have traded this experience for anything in the world. Sometimes I know I take this career for granted by the things I do, but without basketball I wouldnt have got to know many of my friends I have to this day and saw many of the places that many can only dream of seeing on television. So yea this blog session was about me not retiring but guess what its my blog and I can write what I want to. Last thing as far as answering my boy who asked me the other day what will I do when I finish playing, Ill answer that when I am actually finished, but until that time comes find me on a court here in Germany bruh.. Take care everyone and Ill talk soon.
its my blog and if you dont like it dont read it John Bynum (191-G-78, agency: Scorers 1st Sportmanagement, college: Metro St.)

Trying to finish strong- Feb.20, 2012 (by Eurobasket Center) Whats up everyone. Its been awhile since my last post so I wanted to fill everyone in. Recently we have been playing much better and have a legit shot to stay in Pro A despite the fact that a lot of people had no doubt at all we would move down to pro A due to lack of experienced players. Whats up everyone. Its been awhile since my last post so I wanted to fill everyone in. Recently we have been playing much better and have a legit shot to stay in Pro A despite the fact that a lot of people had no doubt at all we would move down to pro A due to lack of experienced players. This is understandable considering starting the season we were the only team in the league without 1 player who had pro A experience. I think as the season has gone on we have improved and made the adjustments necessary to become a better team. We are competing every game and have had a lot of games that would have resulted in wins had a few things gone our way. All in all this has been a great 1st year overseas. I would love to win more games but I have enjoyed my time spent here in Augsburg and the people have been great. Personally I think I adjusted well especially since I did not play basketball for a year after graduation from college. I am looking forward to see how the end of the season plays out. Expect to see us make a run! I am very fortunate and thankful to be doing what I love for a living and am hoping to keep playing as long as my body allows me too and the opportunities present themselves!
I will check back in at the end of the season but for now have a great one everyone! Finish up your seasons strong and Ill check in later!
